I have just heard from Caboose Hobbies in Denver that my Athearn/Rail Products GP60M I ordered weeks ago is on the way. I had also acquired painted and numbered GP60M/B shells from Athearn parts. They look pretty good. I am mating them to Proto 2000 drives. They fit very well with a little work.
I can sympathize with Tyco GP20's and Atlas SD24's converters. I combined an Atlas S4, an ancient Varney NW2 ( I figured out a way to sand off the louvers on the access doors), Kemtron ends, Athearn frame and a Cannon Cab. It turned out pretty good. Of course, Kato announced and delivered their vervion (with the louvers already scaped off!). I still enjoy my 2409 and it runs as good as the Kato.
The latest issue of RMC has a full picture ad by Athearn on the release of the CF7's, including road numbers.
It looks like Athearn could have done a better job on the road numbers to allow for spanning a greater time span. Here are the details I have found so far:
CF7 - Round cab - Warbonnet
Road number 2496 - Picture in The Santa Fe Diesel Book, V1, shows it has square cab by 3/84.
Road number 2548 - did get square cab, according to list in Oct 86 issue of Extra 2200 South.
CF7 - Square Cab - Wabonnet
2486 - square cab, according to list in Oct 86 issue of Extra 2200 South and four stacks. Good number.
2633 - square cab, but has only two exhaust in the 10-84 picture on The Santa Fe Diesel Book, V1. According to list in Oct 86 issue of Extra 2200 South, it did get four exhaust before retirement (1986 or so).
I guess I am fustrated that Athearn did not pick road numbers for the round cab that had the four exhausts, but never received the square cab. With 27 units to pick from in the list in Oct 86 issue of Extra 2200 South, these road numbers could span a greater time span.
Then picking a square cab unit that received four exhaust so late (2-3 years for retirement) is also a little disappointment.
I am glad Athearn is doing these units, but with the information readily available, I wish better numbers would have been picked. Maybe on the next release...
